Your liver has many functions and plays a large role in your overall health.  And while outwardly you may feel you are healthy, sometimes your insides can tell a very different story. Monitoring your diet can help keep the liver healthy. Being obese hampers the liver, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Individuals with the most severe form of the disease, called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), have inflammation and liver cell damage, which can lead to scarring, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Therefore a diet high in fat, sugar and cholesterol must be avoided. Otherwise it triggers inflammation in the liver and the body responds by sending immune cells to neutralize the threat. Unfortunately, the immune response can rage out of control, creating even more inflammation and further damaging the liver.

Here are some foods that can help you heal the liver:

Broccoli, onion and garlic

These foods are believed to provide sulfur to the body. Sulphur, helps enhance the detoxifying reactions in the liver, and carry out processes that prevent its damage.

 

Beetroot

This purplish-red root contains pectin, which is very useful in flushing out the toxins from the liver, and does not allow them to be reabsorbed.

If you aren’t consuming sufficient calories, your body will use the protein that you consume to burn for energy.
